How to Use AI to Study for O/L Exams in Sri Lanka

April 20, 2026·8 min read

The Ordinary Level exam is one of the most important milestones in a Sri Lankan student's life. Nine subjects. Two years of preparation. And the results that shape your A/L stream and, ultimately, your university prospects. The pressure is real — but the tools available to students today are unlike anything previous generations had.

AI assistants like SriAI can help you understand concepts faster, practice more effectively, and review your work at any time of day. This guide explains exactly how to use AI for O/L preparation — subject by subject.

Start with the syllabus, not the textbook

The most common O/L mistake is reading the textbook cover to cover without knowing which parts carry the most exam weight. Before opening any textbook, ask SriAI:

“What are the most important topics in the O/L Mathematics syllabus for the Sri Lankan Department of Examinations?”

You'll get a structured overview of high-weightage areas — algebra, geometry, statistics — so you can prioritise your study time. Do this for every subject before you begin.

How to use AI for each core O/L subject

Mathematics

Mathematics is where AI assistance is most immediately useful. When you get a question wrong, paste it into SriAI with the prompt:

“Explain step by step how to solve this: [paste question]. I got [your wrong answer] — where did I go wrong?”

This forces you to engage with the error rather than just moving on. SriAI will walk through each step, identify the mistake, and explain the underlying concept.

Science

O/L Science covers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in one paper. Use AI to generate short explanations of definitions:

“Explain photosynthesis as if I am 14 years old and need to understand it for an exam. Include the equation and two common exam questions.”

Adding “include two common exam questions” at the end of any concept request will give you instant practice material.

English Language

For essay and letter writing, share your draft and ask for specific feedback:

“Here is my O/L English formal letter draft. Check it for grammar errors, suggest a stronger opening sentence, and tell me if I followed the formal letter format correctly.”

History and Geography

Structured lists are your friend here. Ask for:

“Give me five key causes of the 1948 independence of Ceylon that would be relevant for an O/L History paper. Format as bullet points I can memorise.”

Sinhala / Tamil language papers

SriAI can read and respond in both Sinhala and Tamil. If you are a Sinhala-medium student, you can ask your questions in Sinhala and get answers in Sinhala. For example:

සාම්ප්‍රදායික ශ්‍රී ලාංකික සාහිත්‍ය රචනයකට හොඳ ආරම්භයක් ලිවීමට කෙසේ ද?

Tamil-medium students can do the same in Tamil — SriAI will respond in the language you write in.

Practice papers with AI

One of the best uses of AI for O/L is generating practice questions on demand:

“Give me 5 short-answer questions on the topic of electricity in O/L Science, at the same difficulty level as the Sri Lankan O/L exam.”

After attempting them yourself, ask for the answers and explanations. This is more effective than re-reading notes because it requires active recall.

The night-before review technique

The evening before an exam, use this prompt for any topic you're uncertain about:

“I have my O/L [Subject] exam tomorrow. Give me the 10 most important things to remember — facts, formulas, definitions — that are most likely to appear on the paper.”

This gives you a focused last-minute revision list without the overwhelm of re-reading full chapters.

What AI cannot do for you

AI is a study tool, not a shortcut. It cannot sit the exam for you, and it works best when you've already made an attempt. Always try the question yourself first, then use SriAI to check your work or explain where you went wrong. Students who use AI as a replacement for thinking — rather than a check on their thinking — do not improve.

Use it daily, use it honestly, and use it as the world's most patient tutor. That's what it's for.
